FPC Automobile Application Example: Guidosimplex

Guidosimplex is a company that focus on the development and sale of automobile interior components and accessories. Founded in Rome, Italy, the company has 50 years of experience in developing automobile car control components. In 2017, the company’s president, Mr. Giovanni, contacted our company, Mondo Technology, which has 14 years of experience in FPC manufacturing and SMT services for circuit boards. We received a sample of the FPC automotive component from Guidosimplex, which was delivered by DHL from Rome, Italy, to Shenzhen, China.

How We Helped Our Customer’s Business

To meet Guidosimplex’s needs, our engineers thoroughly studied the provided FPC automotive sample and proceeded with the PCB copying process. Here are the specific steps we followed:

  1. Recording and Documentation:
We carefully recorded the models, parameters, and positions of all vital components on paper, paying close attention to the direction of diodes, triodes, and IC notches. It’s essential to take clear pictures of the component locations using a digital camera to ensure accuracy, as some components may be difficult to identify visually.
  2. Disassembling and Cleaning:
We removed all the parts from the multi-layer board and cleaned the PCB using alcohol. Prior to scanning, we polished the top and bottom layers with water gauze paper to achieve a shiny copper film surface. The PCB was then placed in a scanner, and the scanning resolution was adjusted to ensure clear image capture. Both layers of the PCB were scanned in color using Photoshop.
  3. Image Enhancement and Conversion:
In Photoshop, we adjusted the contrast and brightness of the scanned images to enhance the visibility of the copper film and non-copper areas. We converted one of the images into black and white to check the clarity of the lines. If needed, we repeated this step until the lines were clear. Once satisfied, the images were saved as black and white BMP format files, named TOP.BMP and BOT.BMP. Any image issues were addressed and corrected using Photoshop.
  4. Conversion to PROTEL Format:
The two BMP format files were converted to PROTEL format files, and the two layers were transferred into the PROTEL software. By comparing the positions of the pads and vias on the two layers, we ensured that the previous steps were accurately executed. If any deviations were found, we repeated the third step. This meticulous process ensures the quality and precision of the copied PCB.
  5. Combination and Verification:
The TOP.PCB and BOT.PCB files were combined into a single picture within the PROTEL software. Using a laser printer, we printed the top layer and bottom layer on transparencies, maintaining a 1:1 ratio. We then compared the printed film with the original PCB to verify the accuracy of the copied design. If there were no errors, the process was considered successful.

By following these steps with great attention to detail, we were able to meet Guidosimplex’s needs for FPC PCB copying, ensuring precise replication and maintaining the desired quality and compatibility.
